Red Bull boss Christian Horner says that his team dropped to fourth place after the disaster in qualifying, and after McLaren overtook them, Ferrari and Mercedes have now done it.
The current champions arrived at the race weekend in Monza with the hope of getting in the way of the problems they have had for a long time. After opening the second part of the season in Zandvoort, it was thought that they had taken a step forward, but the opposite happened.
Red Bull set out to test the improvements made to understand where they had made the wrong step in development and get back to where they were at the start of the season, when they were the team to beat.
But that’s where they suffered the heaviest defeat, because the gap behind the race winner [Lando Norris] was over 22 seconds. From the camp of the Austrian team, they justified that the settings were not right and that they would solve it quickly.
Arriving at Monza, a track that suits Red Bull due to speed and their powerful DRS, it was thought the Milton Keynes team would end the adversity they were facing and get back on the winning track.
However, once again there was testing of used and new parts to find the right path for the RB20. Qualification at the Italian Grand Prix brought new disappointment in this team.
The leader of the championship placed only in 7th place with a gap of almost seven tenths, while Jr. Sergio Perez is in a lower position with a gap of over seven tenths.
Drivers from the top 4 teams placed ahead of them, so the drivers of the Austrian team have another difficult task to achieve a good result. The Red Bull boss is aware of what’s going on, but they don’t have a real answer yet.
“We ran the older spec last weekend to see if that solved any problems at all and the reality was we still had the same handling characteristics and problems with that spec from the start of the year,” Horner told Sky F1.
“It gave a lot of information for the guys, but a lot for us to understand each other. And we have to solve it quickly. We can see that McLareno has made a significant step in the last few races. And now we are behind Ferrari and Mercedes,” he noted
“There is something that is obviously not working on the car and we are trying to resolve it. First of all, you need to understand the problem and understand how to solve it, and then implement it. There will be an engineering solution to an engineering problem,” added the Red Bull boss.
