Former Haas boss Guenther Steiner is confident Lewis Hamilton will do his best to help Ferrari win the title next year, when the seven-time world champion joins the Italian team.
The British driver will switch to Ferrari at the end of the current season, and for the 2025 season he will drive the car he dreamed of as a child. Hamilton surprised the motorsport world with this decision.
Before the start of the current season, the 39-year-old signed for Ferrari. Although he extended his contract with Mercedes last year, it contained a clause in which he could leave the Silver Arrows after one year.
The seven-time champion did just that, took advantage of the opportunity and activated the clause in his contract. Initially, it was mentioned that it lasts for two years, but the head of Ferrari stated that a three-year contract was signed.
The former boss of Haas expressed his opinion about what the British driver will try to do, and how he is fully prepared.
“I’m pretty sure he still has that hunger and obviously moving to Ferrari next year will also rejuvenate him,” said Steiner. “Lewis is above the pressure. In other words, he achieved so much in his life that he became a sports icon.”
“But he made the decision to go there. He is a seven-time world champion, he has nothing to prove. He is not the one who will fail Ferrari, that is my opinion,” he noted.
“You know how Ferrari is. They tried to win the world championship, I don’t know how long ago it was so long ago that I can’t remember.”
According to the Italian, one of the trump cards for Ferrari will be the fact that Hamilton drove for Fred Vasseur, the current boss of the Maranello team, when he drove in F3 and then in Formula 2.
“For sure, it’s a challenge for him. And we all know that he has a very good relationship with Fred Vasseur, that’s one of the reasons why he goes there. When he was younger, in the lower series, he always raced for Fred at the time.”
“So they are good friends and that will help them. They will try to do it together and I think it’s a good idea. Will it work? We do not know. It is a very difficult task to win the title, and Ferrari is always almost at that level, but never quite at that level.”
“It’s one of those things at some point. They obviously think their time will come. He signed for a certain number of years to make sure he has enough time to get there.”
