Max Verstappen and several other drivers are under investigation for driving under virtual safety car conditions after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
In Baku, VSC retired due to a penultimate lap collision between Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz, who collided on the run to Turn 3.
Their collision caused debris on that part of the track through which the drivers had to curve, while an ambulance was also called in the incident as a precaution.
The track-wide VSC situation, which prohibits all overtaking, remained in place until the end of the race, when Red Bull driver Verstappen was seen passing George Russell and Lando Norris on the main straight before pitting, giving a congratulatory thumbs up to Norris for won their battle.
Verstappen was subsequently called by the stewards for overtaking while the yellow flags were in effect, as were Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly and Nico Hulkenberg.
Verstappen, who finished fifth after a difficult race, said he was surprised to be under investigation for what he considered standard practice.
“Yes, I don’t know. I did everything right,” said Verstappen. “I passed the finish line, everything is fine. The checkered flag.”
“I think on the in-lap at the end of the race, there are many examples before where it was the same, virtual safety car, safety car. Drive inside and on the in-lap, pass people slowly or well done, that’s what I did.”
