Lewis Hamilton the fastest in the 2nd practice of the Italian Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time of 1:20.738, marking the first day of the racing weekend. The second is Lando Norris . The third place went to Carlos Sainz .

The second session of the Italian Grand Prix took place in sunny conditions which allowed the drivers to continue testing the upgrades brought in for this race weekend, which means a lot to most of the teams.

Franco Colapinto was among the first on the track and set a measured time of 1:23.221 on medium tires. After that, Hamilton recorded a 1:21.641 and came out on top. Norris was the next driver with the fastest time of 1:21.605.

Of the 18 drivers after 10 minutes, only Ricciardo was on the soft, while the others were on the medium, and several drivers spun out in the first corner. Sainz replaced Norris at the top with a time of 1:21.264. Leclerc brought a new change at the top with a time of 1:21.119.

The ranking after the first quarter was: Leclerc, Sainz, Norris, Verstappen, Hamilton, Albon, Piastri, Gasly, Ricciardo, Hulkenberg. In the first 20 minutes, Perez and Russell did not enter the track.

Lando Norris went out on soft tires and set a new fastest lap of 1:20.851. George Russell joined the track for the first time after 22 minutes because he was waiting for the mechanics to fix the car that Antonelli destroyed in the first session. Norris further accelerated the lap recording a 1:20.741.

Hamilton soon moved the McLaren driver from the top position after clocking a 1:20.738. During fast laps, both Mercedes drivers reported their seats overheating. Kevin Magnussen went off track halfway through practice and ended up in the Monza barriers, causing a red flag.

The standings after the second period looked like this: Hamilton, Norris, Sainz, Piastri, Leclerc, Hulkenberg, Ricciardo, Alonso, Stroll and Bottas.

After the Haas car was removed from the gravel, the drivers had 18 minutes left in the session, which time was used to simulate the race. Stints on medium tires of 7 laps showed that McLaren was the fastest, while Leclerc and Verstappen were tied – with the fact that the Montenegrin of the 4 drivers completed the most laps. In this part, Russell also tried a flying lap, with which he came in 6th place.
