Hamilton: We are not far from the top

Lewis Hamilton is not giving up on his dreams of victory at Silverstone this weekend. The Briton will drive his last British Grand Prix as a Mercedes driver, with whom he has won seven times at this track and would like to do it again. It won’t be easy, but Mercedes has improved enough to fight at least for the podium.

Hamilton is a Silverstone legend with eight wins, more than twice as many as almost any other driver. Seven of those eight victories, with the exception of 2008, were achieved by the Silver Arrows, with whom he will part ways at the end of this season.

Taking into account the victory of the German team in Austria, there is reason for optimism because they have made significant steps forward, and on this track they always have something extra in them to be able to do.

“In terms of pure performance I don’t think we’re quite there, as you’ve seen in the last few weeks especially in the fast corners, McLaren is the fastest or maybe Max, but we’re close,” Hamilton said ahead of the British GP.

“We are not far away. We’ve made some big steps forward and it’s great to see us getting closer to the top of the grid.”

“I think 2008 will be a special year. My first win here, in the rain, was the beginning of my journey with these fans. In 2021 I felt really good, I’ve been on this path for a long time, but in 2008 there were very complicated conditions, a lot of rain, the hardest thing a driver will experience and the level at which I was able to perform, as well as the possibility of winning from 68 seconds is the biggest difference,” he added.

On the other hand, Hamilton did not want to take a stand or give an opinion on the incident between Lando Norris and Max Verstappen at the Austrian Grand Prix. Although he had ups and downs with the current champion, the Briton took a neutral stance.

“I have nothing to say. I was more concerned about my race and enjoying the team’s victory. I shouldn’t say anything to Lando, they have been competing for many years, I won’t go into it. I don’t have much to add, I’ve already talked about that,” added Lewis Hamilton.
