Ford hinted at the possibility of a four-door Mustang two years ago, and recently the company’s CEO Jim Farley said that a four-door coupe can be credible as long as it matches the “performance and attitude of the original.”
Now Automotive News reports that the Mustang family will grow. Citing people who attended a dealer meeting in Las Vegas, Automotive News reports that executives showed off a rendering of a four-door coupe that could be called the Mach-4 or Mach 4. Apparently, the nomenclature mimics the Mach-E name where is the letter E for electric here replaced by the number 4 for the four-door coupe.
Farli also allegedly showed the salesmen “a photo of an off-road Baja model.” The publication states that the car was raised, and mentions four-wheel drive. The idea of such a robust Mustang was inspired by models such as the Porsche 911 Dakar and the Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato.
There’s no word on when these models might go into production, but a spokesperson told Auto News they have “very exciting plans to expand the portfolio with new vehicles.”
Farley, who was named Ford CEO at the end of 2020 and has been revamping the lineup ever since, sees the Mustang’s rise to global prominence as a major win for the company. “When we decided around 2015 to go global with the Mustang—with right-hand drive and other expensive changes—it felt like we were taking a big risk. But it was worth it. Today, some of our biggest dealers are in countries like Sweden and Australia. I would say the Mustang’s future has never been brighter.”
In this factory drawing from September 2022, there is an otherwise interesting idea of a Mustang in the form of a four-door coupe. The sketch comes from Christopher Stevens, the company’s senior exterior designer.
The car retains the iconic coupe-like shape of the model, with fastback styling that flows into the short rear end, like the two-door model. A contrasting top helps to hide the length, and there’s a door handle on the rear fender.
