Very Rare 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Fastback Is Going To Auction

1969 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Fastbackor sale at the Mecum Auctions To be sold at the Kissimmee 2023 auction, Kissimmee, FL, January 4-15, 2023. Ford built only 1,628 Boss 302 Mustangs following its April 1969 introduction as a Trans-Am homologation special. Of the four colors offered for the 1969 Boss 302, Wimbledon White was the rarest with only 194 built, and most came with black interiors. This comprehensively restored Wimbledon White 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 302 appealed to noted Boss collector Gary Thomas because it was ordered with the white Deluxe bucket-seat interior, making it a one-of-one per its Deluxe Marti Report.

Delivered new to Ford dealer Maurice W. Andrews Inc. in Lima, New York, the Boss 302 was also well-optioned from the factory with the Toploader wide-ratio 4-speed transmission, Traction-Lok differential, rear spoiler, rear window sports slats and chrome 15-inch Magnum 500 wheels. The 1969 Boss 302 Mustang was not only Ford’s response to the Camaro Z28 but also a way for Ford to homologate a special 302 CI engine with large-port Cleveland 4-barrel cylinder heads adapted to the Windsor block to give Ford an advantage on the Trans-Am road courses. As a high-performance model, the Boss 302s came with Ford’s heaviest duty equipment, including the mandatory Toploader 4-speed, a 9-inch rear axle and Competition Suspension with staggered rear shocks to dampen wheel hop under hard acceleration. To accommodate the new Goodyear F60x15 tires, the front fender lips were rolled for clearance and extra bracing was added to the shock towers.

Ford stylist Larry Shinoda, who had been recruited away from GM in 1968, came up with the “Boss” name and designed the reflective side C-stripes, blackout paint treatment and front spoiler. Because Shinoda demanded that everything be functional, the Boss 302 is the only 1969 Ford Mustang Fastback without the fake brake cooling scoops in the rear quarter panels.
