Mick Schumacher reserve driver for Mercedes 2023

Mick Schumacher could take a backup role at Mercedes for 2023 if he loses his seat at Haas .

Auto Motor und Sport reports that the German driver is attracting interest from the Silver Arrows, who could look for Schumacher if Daniel Ricciardo looks for second place.

Ricciardo has been heavily linked with a third driver’s role at Mercedes after admitting he will not race in F1 next year.

Schumacher is believed to challenge Nico Hulkenberg for second place at Haas alongside Kevin Magnussen, who is tied down on a multi-year contract.

AMuS also reports that Alpine is interested in Schumacher as a replacement for Oscar Piastri, who will race for McLaren in 2023.

Jack Doohan, who took part in Practice 1 with Alpine last time out in Mexico, should focus on his second season in Formula 2 after a successful rookie season.

“I think we can finish it pretty quickly,” said Haas boss Guenther Steiner ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix . “Hopefully we’ll be able to announce something next week, whatever we do.”

“I hope that is my goal, but I make no promises. Hopefully before [Abu Dhabi]. When I say: ‘I hope’, it is not a fact.”

When asked to clarify whether a decision had been made, Steiner replied: “No. It is inevitable. I’m quite busy at the moment… I’m thinking slowly! We wanted to make sure we made the right decision.”

Mercedes is no stranger to the Schumacher family – the last three years in F1, Mick Schumacher’s father – Michael laid the foundation for what Mercedes did from 2014 to 2021.
