1968 Shelby GT500 Fastback for sale at the Mecum Auctions To be sold at the Kissimmee 2022 auction, Kissimmee, FL, January 6-15, 2022.. Shelby No. 00749 was built with a mix of equipment that represents the balance of performance and luxury that later Shelby Mustangs personified. It has the 428/360 HP Police Interceptor V-8—in this case, a matching-numbers engine—joined to a 4-speed manual transmission to make the most of all those big-block ponies. Yet it also was equipped with air conditioning and tinted glass to keep the occupants comfortable when the weather turned hot and sticky, as it would in Houston where the Shelby was sold new. The 3.00:1 rear end gears were a good choice for all-around performance, low enough for brisk acceleration but high enough to keep the big motor from winding too hard on Texas’ wide-open roads. All the Shelbys of this era were equipped with power steering and power brakes with front discs as standard equipment; the 10-spoke aluminum wheels, mounting Goodyear Speedway tires, were an option.
