1970 Chevy Chevelle SS396 drag racing 1971 Dodge Charger R/T
First car is a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle Super Sport. The other a 1971 Dodge Charger RT. The Chevelle has a L34 “396” V8 but was actually 402ci by 1970 (error in the video). The Charger R/T has a 440 Magnum V8. The 1970 Chevy Chevelle 396 was rated 350 horsepower and the Charger RT Magnum 440 was rated 370 horsepower. The 1970 Chevelle Super Sport features a 4-speed manual transmission while the Dodge Charger has a TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic. Rear gearing in the Chevelle is 3.31, and 3.55 in the Charger R/T. The 1971 Charger R/T was heavy weighing-in at 4212 pounds, including the driver. The Super Sport Chevelle is also rather heavy at 3938 pounds. There were 51,455 total L34 Chevelle SS396 produced in 1970. Total Chargers produced in 1971 was 82,114 with total number of R/Ts being controversial: likely around 2659 – 3118. The 1971 Charger 440 was tested by Car and Driver in March 1971 with results showing a 0-60 of 6.5 seconds and the 1/4 mile in 14.8 seconds @ 95.7 mph.
